She is the reason why pop music never gets stale and evolves with the times that we live in. Bold and honest, the independent singer and producer manifests her passion and emotions trough her music, never afraid to go where she’s not expected.. We are happy to introduce you to the talented artist from Switzerland – IMELDA GABS!
[Blaster] Thank you for your time Imelda! What music did you grow up listening to?
IMELDA GABS: I grew up listening to a lot of Jazz and Soul music, seasoned with some Rock as well.
[Blaster] How did you become involved in music production?
IMELDA GABS: I started writing and composing songs quite early on, just piano and vocal, but music production is something I seriously dived into in 2020. I started by building my own home studio, which enabled me to stay productive during the Covid era. It gave me the tools to fully express myself and explore sounds and genres outside of my comfort zone.
[Blaster] How would you describe your musical style?
IMELDA GABS: I like to describe my music as Alternative Pop with hints of Soul and Rock. I’ve always loved exploring different musical genres without staying in one precise box. It gives me the opportunity to fully express myself in the most authentic and free way.
[Blaster] Is there an hidden meaning in any of your music?
IMELDA GABS: I like to write songs where you can gradually dive into, and the deeper you go, the more meaningful it gets.
[Blaster] Who writes your songs?
IMELDA GABS: I write and produced my own songs.
[Blaster] Where do you find your artistic inspiration?
IMELDA GABS: Most of my inspiration comes from getting out of my comfort zone. I like to challenge myself by constantly looking for new ways to push my creativity further. Our world is constantly changing and evolving, there’s always something new to see, to learn, to experience! Travelling has been a major part of that process for me, meeting new people, new cultures, new ways to create music.
[Blaster] Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organization?
IMELDA GABS: No I’m an independent artist 🙂
[Blaster] Who are you inspired by?
IMELDA GABS: Artists I really enjoy listening to lately are Sevdaliza, Caroline Polachek, FKA Twigs, Massive Attack, Tove Lo, Grimes, Rina Sawayama, Aurora… The list could go on for a while 😀
[Blaster] Do you collaborate with others? What is that process?
IMELDA GABS: For now I didn’t get to collaborate with other artists, but it’s definitely something I look forward to in the future!
[Blaster] What skills have you learned that will help you in your music career?
IMELDA GABS: Being independent is a rough journey, but that’s also what makes it so rewarding! Step by step, I learned about the business aspect of my music career and dived into the “behind the scenes” of the industry, building my own network, finding the right people to collaborate with. So on top of the creative and musical side, I had to learn how to built a business as well! Even though I might not stay independent throughout my entire career, the experience I gained so far is truly priceless and I’m very thankful for it.
[Blaster] What are the main topics for most of your songs? Do you think topics will change overtime?
IMELDA GABS: My writing is close to my own personal experiences. The topics of my music evolve according to the chapters I go through in life, the people I meet, the memories I have. I’ve written songs about love, but also about deeper subjects like loss, loneliness, and self-doubt. Authenticity is key!
[Blaster] What are you working right now? Did you release something in the past?
IMELDA GABS: I’ve just released a new single ‘Reckless’ with a music video! I’ve released two singles before that, ‘Fallen Angel’ and ‘Alter Ego’ between 2020 and 2021, and I’m currently working on my debut album, which will be released in 2023.
[Blaster] What do you feel is the best song you ever released and why?
IMELDA GABS: My last single ‘Reckless’. I feel that it is my most intricate production compared to my two previous releases, the visuals as well are absolutely stunning thanks to the amazing director I had the chance to work with, Dariy Mambetov. It’s also a very emotional and deep song that means a lot to me.
[Blaster] What would be your dream collaboration, with any musician or producer?
IMELDA GABS: I would love to collaborate with a producer or musician that is not at all in my music genre, it would be so interesting to see what two different minds could create !
[Blaster] How do you balance your music with other obligations – school, hobby, job?
IMELDA GABS: It’s definitely a challenge! Most importantly, I force myself to take breaks to avoid physical and mental burnouts, and second I try to organise my schedule in the most balanced way possible by planning in advance as much as possible.
[Blaster] At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?
IMELDA GABS: Music is and has always been a way to fully express myself and helped me accept me for who I truly am. I hope my songs will enable others to feel the same way.
[Blaster] Would you like to give any message to your fans?
IMELDA GABS: Thank you for supporting my music! It means the world to me to know that other people listen to my work and I cannot wait to share more of it with you soon. Love you all!
