She is a rising star representing the South, and she is doing so in a way that brings a sound that has been missing from the music scene for quite some time. We are happy to introduce you to a talented musician – Nikky Nicole!
[Blaster] Thank you for your time! What music did you grow up listening to?
Nikky Nicole: I grew up listening to a little bit of everything. From classic Jay–Z albums like The Blueprint, Lil Wayne’s No Ceilings tape, to Kirk Franklin’s Melodies from Heaven, and Taylor Swift’s Teardrops on My Guitar. Timeless R&B hits too of course. I had a very diverse taste in music from a young age.
[Blaster] How did you become involved in music production?
Nikky Nicole: I’m always super hands on with my entire creative process, so it was inevitable for me to start learning the movement behind the boards. It just came naturally. My end goal is to be a one woman show so that I’m able to create quality music even without a team.
[Blaster] How would you describe your musical style?
Nikky Nicole: I’d describe my musical style as R&B. Music that evokes emotion. It makes you feel. It’s real and raw, because it’s true emotions, feelings, and thoughts just set to music
[Blaster] Who writes your songs?
Nikky Nicole: I write all of my own music.
[Blaster] Is there a hidden meaning in your music?
Nikky Nicole: I’d like to think that my music is pretty transparent, so no, there aren’t any hidden meanings in my music. I do leave a lot of my lyrics up to interpretation though. Whatever it means to you when you listen to it, that’s the meaning. Even if it varies between different listeners.
[Blaster] Do you collaborate with other musicians? What is that process?
Nikky Nicole: I haven’t collaborated with many other artists, but the few local artists I’ve had the privilege of working with have resulted in some beautiful experiences. I enjoy showing them what I can do in the studio and just being transparent enough for them to feel comfortable doing the same. The vibe has to be right so we can make magic together
[Blaster] What skills have you learned that will help you in your music career?
Nikky Nicole: A few of the skills I’ve learned that will help me in my music career would have to be my 3 P’s: professionalism, preparedness, and patience. They say patience is a virtue, but it is definitely also a skill! Knowing how to be patient is something that has been really helpful to me during my building stages.
[Blaster] Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organization?
Nikky Nicole: I’m an independent artist, and I am not currently associated with any label or music organization.
[Blaster] Where do you find your artistic inspiration?
Nikky Nicole: I find my artistic inspiration in my experiences. I’m young and learning, and my music is just documentation of that. That’s why it’s so relatable. Most people have experienced similar growing pains, similar joys, similar love —they connect with that.
[Blaster] What are the main topics for most of your songs? Do you think topics will change overtime?
Nikky Nicole: Currently my main topics are really just emotions, love, and dream chasing. I feel like my topics will change a little over time because my music is about my real life experiences. As I grow and progress, so will the music.
[Blaster] What are you working on right now? Did you release something in the past?
Nikky Nicole: I just released my second single, Diamonds Dancing, which is my first single of the year. Aside from promoting that and preparing to perform it everywhere this summer, I’m working on my first full project. It’s an EP that will be released within the next few months. I’m super excited about that!
[Blaster] What do you feel is the best song you ever released and why?
Nikky Nicole: Right now, I would definitely have to give the crown to Diamonds Dancing. It’s the most developed song I have. I was making short little songs for awhile and Diamonds Dancing was the first full length track I put out. It feels new and fresh.
[Blaster] Who are you inspired by?
Nikky Nicole: I’m inspired most by past versions of myself. I feel like I learn so much from every old layer of myself that I shed. I know that may not be the most “typical” answer, but it’s the most honest one I can give. I’m inspired to go hard by (my)self.
[Blaster] What would be your dream collaboration, with any musician or producer?
Nikky Nicole: My dream collaboration would be either Beyonce or Jhene Aiko. Beyonce is legendary from her music to her work ethic. I feel like there will never be another her. As for Jhene, I love her entire aesthetic and her pen game is out of this world. She knows how to tell a story and that’s something I always try to do in my own music. I’d be equally honored to work with either of them. They’re both amazing.
[Blaster] How do you balance your music with other obligations – school, hobby, job?
Nikky Nicole: Balancing music and other areas of my life gets very challenging at times, but staying organized and remembering my “why” definitely helps keep me in line. I’m a full time student at South Carolina State University, and I take pride in even being able to say that, soI try to give 110% to every area of my life even on the days when it’s hard.
[Blaster] At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?
Nikky Nicole: At the end of the day, I want people to hear my music and see themselves and know that I’ve either been there, or I’m right there with them while we both go through it. Good or bad. Whatever the energy of the song is. It’s all just emotions while we try to figure life out.
[Blaster] Would you like to give any message to your fans?
Nikky Nicole: I hope you see that I’m just a small–town girl with a voice and a story to tell. My end goal is not fame or riches, even though I know it will come, I really share my gift with the world because it’s what makes me feel whole. I appreciate every bit of love I get from my supporters because it makes the journey worthwhile.
